Don’t go ‘round the bend. By going bananas, our goal is to help you reduce your operating costs, while still providing crew comfort and reduced emissions, by reducing unnecessary idling on your locomotive fleet. With ever-rising costs and decreased revenue, you’re probably under a lot of pressure. Hey, it’s a jungle out there! Here’s some “comfort food” for your budget.
Locomotives idle for a variety of reasons. While some idling is absolutely necessary. What about the idling to provide freeze protection or to simply keep the locomotive’s batteries charged? Can the Banana help? The answer is “Yes”. Just “Go Bananas”.
Introducing the patent pending “Banana” locomotive auxiliary power unit. The Banana APU features a US EPA – Tier 4 F CAT/Perkins 400 Series, 3-cylinder diesel engine. Governed at 2,800 rpm, the engine drives a 130 amp, 72 volt DC generator delivering a robust 18.9 kilowatts of power. This APU heats the locomotive engine coolant with 12 kW via a 72 volt DC heater and waste heat recovery system. Running a 28 horsepower engine versus the locomotive engine, you’ll burn a small fraction of the fuel at idle.
While the locomotive engine is shut down, the APU also heats the locomotive lube oil, charges the locomotive batteries and can be used to power cab heaters, lights and air conditioners, ensuring crew comfort. You’ll save on locomotive engine wear, oil of the stack problems and “dead won’t start locomotive battery problems.
Regardless, the more you idle, the more you can save by installing the Banana APU
With the Banana, we’ve ‘peeled away’ those concerns too. Measuring about 32 inches long by 17 inches wide by 37 inches high, weighing in at a mere 690 lbs, with a variable mount control panel, the Banana APU is so compact, it will fit on virtually any locomotive.
We’ve got you covered. The Banana APU’s price is comparable to the price of the first APU invented over 15 years ago.
