VIA Rail Canada has marked the 70th anniversary of The Canadian, the long-distance passenger service operating between Toronto and Vancouver since 1955.

The event took place at Vancouver’s Pacific Central Station, recognising the train’s role in linking communities across the country for seven decades.

Since its launch, The Canadian has provided a means for travellers to cross varied landscapes by rail, becoming one of the country’s most recognisable long-distance routes.

Mario Péloquin, President and CEO of VIA Rail said:

For 70 years, The Canadian has given Canadians a chance to slow down and experience the beauty of this country in a way that no other journey can offer. It has sparked countless memories: children seeing the mountains for the first time, families crossing the country to be together, strangers becoming friends over coffee in the Skyline car. Its legacy is carried not only by the steel of the rails, but by the people and the stories it connects.

The anniversary comes as VIA Rail undertakes a major renewal of its long-distance, regional and remote fleet. In 2024, the federal government confirmed funding for a new Pan-Canadian fleet, prompting VIA Rail to begin a competitive procurement process for new locomotives and carriages. The organisation expects to identify its preferred suppliers in early 2026.

The project aims to introduce updated, accessible and more sustainable rolling stock over the coming decade, ensuring the continuation of long-distance services such as The Canadian.

The Canada Strong Pass programme has also contributed to increased interest in long-distance travel during the anniversary year, giving more passengers an opportunity to experience the cross-country route.
