The US Department of Transportation (US DOT) has announced a 13.3 million USD investment to upgrade a twin railcar for Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority’s (SEPTA) Silverliner IV commuter rail fleet.
The funding will support the replacement of ageing equipment on the approximately 50-year-old railcars, with the aim of improving reliability, safety and maintenance costs for the regional rail network.
The investment follows a period of increased federal oversight of SEPTA after several fires and thermal incidents involving Silverliner IV vehicles. In response, the Federal Railroad Administration deployed 30 inspectors to support inspections of the fleet.
A total of 223 Silverliner IV cars were inspected and had their thermal sensors replaced. USDOT said there have been no further fires since the inspection programme was completed.

The FRA issued an Emergency Order in October 2025 requiring SEPTA to investigate the causes of the incidents and implement measures to address the underlying safety issues.
The latest investment forms part of wider work to modernise SEPTA’s infrastructure and rolling stock. Pennsylvania has also allocated funding for electrical system upgrades, propulsion motor overhauls and other improvements to the Silverliner IV and newer Silverliner V fleets.
