Predictive Maintenance of Railway Infrastructure

One of the most discussed strategies in the rail industry today is how railway owners can optimize their maintenance cost of the infrastructure. Predictive Maintenance is all about predicting the optimal timing for maintenance which enables looming faults to be identified proactively and necessary maintenance work to be started in time before a fault occurs.

Next Generation Rail Technologies S.L. (NGRT) uses novel technology with a combination of vibrations generated from the rail, accelerometers and gyroscopes, in order to warn the train operators when there is a need for action due to anomalies at the tracks and on the infrastructure.

Train Detection System – A Safety Critical Application

With more than 1,000,000 unprotected level crossings globally, NGRT has designed and developed a low-cost level crossing system based on the CENELEC industry standards. The Train Detection System uses vibrations generated through the rails to detect when and where the train is coming from. Since the TDS predictions the speed of the train, NGRT even offers constant warning time.

All TDS components are installed in close vicinity of the level crossing. No cables are required, other than those running from the wayside cabinet to the Vibration Detection Units. Rapid deployment and low maintenance cost are key elements of the TDS system.

Rockslide and Avalanche Detection System

There are currently no industry standards for warnings of rock falls, avalanches, or flooding. Through NGRT’s suite of applications, this is now possible.

The Rockslide & Avalanche Detection System has been well received by the industry and is currently being tested by customers around the world.

Broken Rail Detection System – Infrastructure Surveillance

The global urban population is growing rapidly and by 2050, around 75% of the world’s population will live in cities. This will put more pressure on the infrastructure owners to constantly monitor their entire infrastructure.

With NGRT’s Broken Rail or Derailment Detection Systems (BRD), the infrastructure owners around the world can monitor their infrastructure 24/7/365. By placing the VDU’s up to 10km apart, the railway control center will receive instant alerts of incidents happening on the infrastructure.

According to a FRA report, broken rail is the most important cause for derailment, resulting in tremendous repair costs for the infrastructure owners. By introducing NGRT’s BRD system, clients will receive early warnings of cracks and thus able to take necessary actions to mitigate the damages.
