New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has published transit schedule details for the 2025 New Year’s and New Year’s Eve holiday period.
Most services will operate to weekend or holiday timetables, with additional capacity provided on New Year’s Eve to support travel into and out of New York City.
The authority is advising passengers to check real-time information via mta.info and its mobile applications before travelling, particularly during periods affected by road closures and special events.

New York City Subway
On New Year’s Eve, Wednesday 31 December, subway services will operate to a standard weekday timetable. Additional evening and post-midnight services will run on the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, C, D, G, L, N, Q, R and 42nd Street Shuttle lines. The A line will operate as an express service until 02:30.
On New Year’s Day, Thursday 1 January, the subway will operate to a Sunday timetable.
New York City Buses
On New Year’s Eve, bus services in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan, along with some routes in Queens, will operate on a reduced weekday schedule. Other routes in Queens will continue to run to a standard weekday timetable. The B100, B103, BM1 to BM5 and all BXM routes will operate normal weekday services. On Staten Island, buses will run to a weekday school-closed schedule. Services in and around Midtown Manhattan may be subject to diversions due to road closures.
On New Year’s Day, bus services across all five boroughs will operate on a Sunday timetable.
Access-A-Ride
Paratransit services will operate 24 hours a day on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Customers are advised to allow extra time when booking trips, as traffic congestion and street closures, particularly around Times Square, may result in delays or alternative pick-up and drop-off locations.
Long Island Rail Road
On New Year’s Eve, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) will operate 11 additional trains on the Babylon, Montauk, Ronkonkoma, Port Jefferson and Port Washington branches, running to Grand Central Madison or Penn Station from early evening onwards.
In the early hours of New Year’s Day, 12 additional services will operate to support travel back to Long Island. All LIRR services on Thursday 1 January will run to a Sunday timetable.
Metro-North Railroad
During the New Year period, Metro-North services will vary by date and route. On Monday and Tuesday, 29–30 December, and on Friday 2 January 2026, East of Hudson lines will operate to a Friday timetable, with additional mid-day and mid-afternoon services.
On New Year’s Eve, Metro-North will run a special weekday schedule, including extra late-evening and post-midnight services. On New Year’s Day, hourly services will operate on the Hudson and Harlem lines, with additional trains on the New Haven line. Weekend timetables will apply on the Wassaic, New Canaan, Danbury and Waterbury branches.
West of Hudson services on the Pascack Valley and Port Jervis lines will operate to a weekday timetable on 29–30 December and on New Year’s Eve, with extra late-night services, followed by a weekend timetable on New Year’s Day.
Bridges and Tunnels
Temporary daytime road closures at MTA bridges and tunnels will end at 13:00 on Wednesday 31 December and remain suspended through Friday 2 January 2026. From Friday 2 January, roadworks and off-peak lane closures may resume, subject to traffic conditions.
The MTA recommends that passengers check services in advance and allow additional travel time when moving around the region during the holiday period.
