The French city of Lyon, with it’s extensive light rail network, added it’s most recent addition to their tracks with the inauguration of the initial phase of Line T5 tramway.

President of the Transport Union of the Urban Area of Lyon (SYTRAL) Bernard Rivalta, Senator and Mayor of Lyon Gérard Collomb and Vice-President Sales Alstom Transport, France, Hubert Peugeot attended the inauguration of Line T5 which also saw the unveiling of two Alstom Citadis high-capacity trainsets which will run on the T3 tramway line starting in December 2012.

The new Line T5 is a 3.8km branch with four new stations off line T2 from Les Alizés around the perimeter of Lyon-Bron Airport extending to the Eurexpo exhibition centre. The construction project cost €59.3 million and the T5 services will share tracks with Line T2 between Grange Blanche and the junction at Les Alizés.

Alstom Citadis 302 Low Floor LRV’s to Operate on Lyon Line T5

Alstom Citadis 302 low-floor LRV’s will operate the services on the new line which is expected to carry around 10,000 passengers per day. The commercial speed on the line is  23km/h with an 18 minute journey time between the termini with trams running at 10 minute intervals.

A further €25.7 million is being spent on a 1.7km extension from Eurexpo to Chassieu-René Cassin is 2014.
