InnoTrans 2024: Stadler Presents Class 99 Locomotive for UK Market

At InnoTrans 2024, Stadler unveiled its new Class 99 locomotive for Beacon Rail and GB Railfreight.

This new bimodal Co’Co’ locomotive is based on the proven EURODUAL locomotive. It has a dual drive, allowing for pure electric or combined diesel-electric operation. This will enable the unit to be deployed on electrified and non-electrified lines.

By operating in the place of locomotives powered purely by diesel, this model will help reduce carbon emissions on the UK railway.

Alike to the EURODIAL, the new locomotive for the UK can reach speeds of 120 km/h. At 500 kN, it is also more powerful than any other European mainline locomotive.

To enable operations in Britain, the model has been adapted to the British clearance gauge and is narrower and lower than its European counterpart.

As on all EURODUAL locomotives, the Class 99 units each have six independently driven axles. The latest 3-axle bogie technology ensures excellent traction alongside low-track forces.

Meanwhile, the Class 99’s two driver’s cabs offer excellent visibility and a comfortable, centrally positioned seat.

The vehicles are also equipped with camera systems providing a direct view of pantographs, the shunting area and the track. This will assist drivers in poor weather conditions. What’s more, an advanced remote diagnostics system is integrated into the vehicle control unit.

In line with British standards, the train protection system features an Automatic Warning System (AWS) and a Train Protection & Warning System (TPWS). The locomotive is also being prepared for the installation of the European Train Control System (ETCS) system.
