InnoTrans 2024: Alstom Presents Berlin’s Longest Tram

At InnoTrans 2024, Alstom is exhibiting the Urbanliner Flexity tram, the longest in Berlin.

The new nine-section version is 50.89 metres long: the equivalent of approximately 10 elephants! This longer model will be rolled out to increase capacity on the city’s busy M4 route.

BVG ordered the vehicles under a 2020 agreement for Alstom to supply up the 117 trams. This agreement included a firm order for 17 extra-long units to be delivered by 2026.

The tram seats 92 passengers with space for 220 standees. It features advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including ODAS obstacle detection to prevent collisions.

The model also uses CCTV instead of exterior mirrors, features smart lighting that adjusts according to the time of year, and provides accessibility features for wheelchair users and the visually impaired.

In addition, the vehicle’s low-noise bogie architecture significantly reduces vibrations and life-cycle costs
