Hitachi Rail to Expand ETCS Implementation in Thailand

Hitachi Rail has been awarded contracts to install European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 1 digital signalling on two major railway lines in Thailand.

The projects will upgrade 780.7 kilometres of track on the Northeast Line (Nong Waeng Rai to Nong Phok) and the North Line (Den Chai to Ngao) while equipping three vehicles with ETCS technology.

These upgrades are part of Thailand’s double-track development programme. They aim to improve intercity rail by enhancing speed, safety, and reliability.

The programme includes adding second tracks, modernising stations, and upgrading signalling systems with ETCS technology to enable real-time communication between trains and trackside infrastructure. This upgrade will allow for safer and more efficient operations with increased capacity.

Hannes Boyer, VP Mainline Signalling, Hitachi Rail, said:

“We are proud to continue enhancing safety on Thailand’s rail network. From solution design and equipment supply to installation support, testing, and commissioning, our experts deliver a proven solution for both passengers and freight, which is installed on over 26,000 kilometres of mainline railway signalling systems around the world.”

These contracts were signed with LS Electric Co. Ltd., which will handle the overall signalling and telecommunications scope on the lines.
