Drax Powers Ahead with British Steel’s Zinoco®
British Steel’s revolutionary Zinoco® rail, which provides durable corrosion protection, has been installed at the UK’s largest power station.
Each year around 14 million tonnes of biomass and coal is transported by rail across Drax’s huge site near Selby, North Yorkshire. It helps Drax supply 6 per cent of the country’s electricity needs, including 11 per cent of its renewable power.
With the company’s rail network being an integral part of its business, it’s imperative track availability is maximised and potentially time-consuming and costly repairs are kept to a minimum.
British Steel has therefore supplied Drax with our Zinoco® rails for an area of the site’s track where significant corrosion damage was identified during a renewal programme.
Richard Bell, British Steel’s Commercial Director Rail, said:
“Zinoco® was designed for use in environments where corrosion determines rail life, areas such as the level crossing at Drax where it’s just been installed.
“We were pleased to support Drax on their track renewal programme and we’re delighted to see Zinoco®, which was developed at our Scunthorpe headquarters, being used by a growing number of rail operators.”
