Deutsche Bahn’s infrastructure company, DB InfraGO, has announced plans to significantly extend its modernisation activities across Bavaria in 2026.
The company is investing more than 4 billion EUR for the renewal of approximately 500 kilometres of track and over 200 switches, alongside new construction and network expansion projects throughout the state.
These initiatives follow major renovation work completed in 2025 in the Werdenfels network and Upper Palatinate. The next phase will include improvements benefiting the Munich S-Bahn, particularly on lines S2, S4, and S7, as well as upgrades in the Allgäu network.

Dr Philipp Nagl, Chief Executive Officer of DB InfraGO AG said:DB InfraGO is investing an additional 10 percent in Bavaria for this work. Together with the general renovations and the new construction and expansion program for lines and stations, this will result in over four billion euros flowing into Bavaria's rail infrastructure in 2026. We know that the many construction sites next year will require a great deal of patience from travellers and ask for their understanding. At the same time, we want to avoid permanent restrictions in rail operations as much as possible. These additional measures are possible thanks to the stable financing situation from the special fund for infrastructure and climate neutrality.
The planned measures form part of a broader federal and state effort to improve reliability, capacity, and sustainability across Germany’s rail network, with Bavaria playing a key role in the modernisation drive.
Christian Bernreiter, Bavarian State Minister for Housing, Construction and Transport said:It's good news that DB is investing more money in the Bavarian rail network. It's also desperately needed! The railway must move forward with new construction projects and urgently invest in infrastructure maintenance and renovation. It will be crucial that the focus isn't just on high-capacity corridors. Equally important is progress on well-advanced projects such as the electrification of the Franconia-Saxony main line and, in general, on branch lines in rural areas. The federal government has set the right course with this special fund. I'm delighted that Deutsche Bahn is now using it to tackle the construction sites in Bavaria!
