VIAS Rail GmbH has been awarded a contract to operate the Rhine-Ruhr’s S 5, S8 and RE 41 S-Bahn lines, with Stadler set to supply 36 modern FLIRT XL multiple units for operation along the routes.

The units supplied by Stadler have been specifically designed to meet the requirements of the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn network and consist of a set of three-car trains.

Jure Mikolčić, CEO of Stadler Division Germany, said:

We are proud that our FLIRT XL vehicles are contributing to the modernisation and increased attractiveness of local transport in the VRR.

The vehicles combine innovative technology with a well-thought-out design and meet the highest standards of comfort and efficiency.

The contract for operation was awarded to VIAS Rail GmbH by the Rhine-Ruhr Transport Association (VRR).

Thomas Esser, Member of the VIAS Management Team, said:

We are pleased that starting in December 2029, we will be able to offer our passengers an attractive and comfortable travel option with the modern FLIRT XL railcars.

Even today, we are one of the largest operators of Stadler FLIRT vehicles. The new trains will be an excellent addition to our fleet.

The new S5 and S8 lines are currently scheduled to begin operating in December 2029, with the RE 41 line set to open in December 2030. The contract between VIAS Rail and the Rhine-Ruhr Transport Association will run until December 2044.
