The project is Shanghai’s first integrated procurement contract to combine the supply of rolling stock with a long-term maintenance agreement.

The Chongming Line trains are formed of three-car, all-motorised trainsets and are equipped with a GoA4 fully automated train operation system, allowing unattended train operation.

The fleet has a maximum operating speed of 120km/h and includes features such as automatic coupling and uncoupling while in service.

The trains also incorporate silicon carbide (SiC) auxiliary converters and oil-free air compressors, technologies intended to improve energy efficiency and reduce maintenance requirements.

The exterior and interior design draws on Chongming Island’s natural environment and Chinese cultural themes. The styling is based on the image of the Oriental Dragon and incorporates references to local landscapes, including terraced fields, rivers and reed beds.

Once complete, Shanghai Metro Line 22 will connect Chongming Island with Shanghai’s wider metro network, extending rail services to the island and improving links with the rest of the city.
