CRRC has debuted a set of brand-new regional trains destined for use on Ningbo’s urban rail transit system.

Set to enter operation on Lines 10 and 12; the Type A trains, the first in China, are intended to be capable of travelling at maximum operating speeds of 160 km/h, which increases on the currently available 80-100 km/h speeds of the existing lines.

The units were jointly developed by Ningbo Rail Transit and CRRC, and made their debut at the CRRC Ningbo Industrial Base. Once operational, they will aid in the integration of the northern and southern parts of Ningbo with the city’s urban core, forming a 60-minute commuting circle across the city.

In line with China’s dual carbon goals, the trains have been developed in a bid to reduce overall energy consumption by roughly 15% compared to more conventional regional trains. This is being achieved through structural optimisation and material upgrades, which result in trains that are 4.28 tonnes lighter, or 2.4% less than conventional models.

The trains’ streamlined design also aims to reduce aerodynamic drag by 5%, with advanced permanent magnet synchronous traction technology lowering traction energy consumption by around 14%.
