Work has started on the principal station building for the East Harbour Transit Hub, a major new interchange in the eastern part of Toronto.
The hub is located east of the Don Valley Parkway and south of Eastern Avenue and is planned as a connection point for the Lakeshore East and Stouffville GO rail lines as well as the Ontario Line. The interchange is intended to expand transport options, shorten journey times and reduce pressure on other parts of the city’s network.
Project partners expect the station to become Toronto’s second-busiest transit facility once operational. Forecasts indicate it could reduce peak-time crowding at Union Station by up to 14 percent, equivalent to around 14,000 passengers.
Major construction activity on the hub began in 2025, with excavation and drilling completed during the initial phase. Current work focuses on foundation construction for the main station building, including the pouring of structural concrete. Separate works are also underway to widen the Eastern Avenue bridge so it can accommodate six rail tracks.
The East Harbour Transit Hub forms part of the wider GO Expansion programme led by Metrolinx in partnership with the governments of Canada and Ontario and the municipal administration in Toronto.
Once completed, the station is projected to handle about 100,000 passenger journeys each day, with train frequencies of up to every five minutes during peak periods.
The hub will also be integrated into a 38-acre transit-oriented development planned for the surrounding East Harbour district, combining residential and commercial construction alongside the transport infrastructure.
