The platforms at Carlisle station (Cumbria) have been resurfaced to the tune of 6.5 million GBP.

This Network Rail investment has improved platforms one, two and three for the station, which is managed by Avanti West Coast. The improvement works also included upgrades to the drainage system, levelling the platforms and reducing the gap between the platform edge and the trains.

Furthermore, tactile paving at the platform edges has made them more usable for passengers who are visually impaired.

Joanna Fielding, scheme project manager at Network Rail, said:

It’s great to see this multi-million-pound revamp to Carlisle station’s platforms finished and being used by passengers.

The improvements make getting on and off trains a smoother and easier experience and it’s another example of Network Rail working with train operators and councils to upgrade the railway for the future.

The Carlisle Station Gateway project is a joint development by Cumbria County Council and Carlisle City Council working with Avanti West Coast, Network Rail and Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership as key partners.
