CAF has signed a contract with Metro de Madrid to supply 40 new trains for the Spanish capital.
This is part of Metro de Madrid’s initiative to renew and expand its rolling stock fleet. These units will be the first of 80 new trains set to be ordered.
The agreement is valued at nearly 400 million EUR and covers the design and delivery of 40 wide-gauge, single-voltage trains to operate on lines 6 and 8 of the metropolitan network.
Additionally, the contract includes the development and implementation of a programme aiming to optimise the fleet’s life cycle. It also contains a future option to increase the number of train units supplied.
This acquisition is financed through loans from the European Investment Bank (EIB). It aims to enhance service quality and increase the capacity of Madrid’s public transport system.
The purchase aligns with the Community of Madrid’s environmental policies and is driven by rising passenger demand and future growth projections. These new trains are also designed to be more energy-efficient, contributing to a more sustainable urban transit system.
Each train unit supplied by CAF will consist of six cars, including four motor cars and two trailer cars. The design features a non-obstructed layout with gangway aisles running the full length of the unit, thus maximising passenger capacity and facilitating movement within the train.
