CAF Signs Two New Contracts in Germany

The CAF Group has secured two contracts in Germany, further attesting to its commitment to the country, where the group is currently supplying electric units to operator Schönbuchbahn.

Together the new contracts value almost 200m euros (237.06m USD).

The first contract is to supply 51 LRV units, along with all relevant spare parts, to Ruhrbahn GmbH between 2024 and 2026.

The new units will be bi-directional, low-floor, 28-metre-long vehicles. Passenger capacity will be a minimum of 173 passengers, including two multipurpose areas for wheelchairs or prams. For enhanced safety, the units will be fitted with a driver assistance system and rear-view cameras instead of the usual mirrors.

The vehicles will run on the tram network that services and connects the cities of Essen and Mülheim. This network currently spans 155km, serving as the transport backbone for the entire metropolitan area.

The second contract is with VAG Freiburg, the organisation responsible for the operation of the Freiburg tram system. CAF will supply eight trams – this is in addition to the 17 Urbos trams it previously supplied, and which are currently in service.

These new units will replace the GT8N vehicles that have been running since the early 1990s, providing improved accessibility and greater capacity.
