Amtrak’s brand-new Airo trainset has officially arrived in Seattle – marking a major milestone in the operator’s journey to introduce a new generation of train services across the region.

The trainset has now entered its final testing, staff training, route testing and practice run stage on the Amtrak Cascades route, and will soon begin welcoming customers on board.

Amtrak is investing in new Airo trainsets across the country

Initially, the trainset began its journey on a dedicated test track in Pueblo, Colorado, where teams validated core systems and ensured the unit’s general performance.

Following this, the train travelled to the Northeast Corridor, where Amtrak both owns and manages the railroad, allowing teams to test the unit on active tracks,.

The new trains are expected to enter operation in the Pacific Northwest later this year, and have been specifically designed to elevate the experience and strengthen service across the region.

Each unit will feature regionally inspired designs, modern amenities, enhanced accessibility and local food & beverage options.

They represent the latest step in Amtrak’s largest fleet modernisation to date, with this first trainset acting as the first of eight planned for the Amtrak Cascades and forming part of a nationwide rollout of 83 Airo trainsets across the country.
