The first unit was developed and produced in 14 months – a company record

Engineered and constructed in 14 months, the unit forms part of a wider contract which will also see Alstom deliver a full signalling system, depot equipment and maintenance to L&T, which is executing the Integrated Systems Package for Mumbai Metro Lines 4 and 4A.

The first trainset was designed in Bengaluru, Karnataka, manufactured at Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, and utilises propulsion systems and bogies from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu and Savli, Gujarat, respectively.

Olivier Loison, Managing Director, Alstom India, said:

Our long-standing partnership with Mumbai’s metro network continues to grow and we are proud to consistently deliver next generation rail solutions for the urban metro network in the city. The Mumbai Line 4 & 4A project also establishes our collaboration with L&T to support MMRDA in its metro network expansion, today is a proud moment for us at Alstom to be showcasing the first trainset at a record time.

As a preferred partner in Mumbai’s sustainable urban mobility journey, we are confident that our advanced rail products and technologies will deliver a world-class travel experience to every Mumbaikar.

Alstom’s new Metropolis trainsets have been inspired by the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA)’s vision for a connected, sustainable and future-ready Mumbai. The units aim to tackle harsher Indian conditions, and are adapted for speeds of up to 90 km/h with an operational speed of 80 km/h. Each train will possess airflow-based cooling, wheelchair access and, in a country-wide first, dedicated bicycle racks.
