Alstom has completed the Manila Light Rail Transit Line 1 Cavite Extension.

It entered passenger service on 16 November 2024, after it was officially inaugurated by the President of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos Jr. along with officials from the Department of Transport and representatives of the Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC).

Alstom worked on this project as a member of a consortium led by Bouygues Travaux Publics. It is Alstom’s first fully integrated metro project in the Philippines.

Phase 1 of the LRT-1 Cavite Extension adds 6.2km to the existing railway line that – upon completion – is forecast to serve up to 400,000 passengers per day. It has a total of 5 new railway stations: Redemptorist-ASEANA, Manila International Airport Road, Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX), Ninoy Aquino Avenue and Dr. Santos (formerly Sucat).

The aim of the Cavite Extension is to cut travel time between Baclaran, Pasay City and Bacoor, Cavite from 1 hour 10 minutes to 25 minutes.

Alstom’s work on the project included delivering the signalling system (with ETCS Level 1), advanced telecommunications, track works, power supply and the overhead catenary systems.

Toby Tiberghien, Managing Director, East Asia, Alstom, said:

We are delighted to contribute to enhancing Manila's transportation infrastructure.

By providing a faster and more efficient alternative to road travel, this project not only improves connectivity across the city but also supports sustainable and reliable public transportation options for its citizens.

In 2022 Alstom upgraded the existing 20km LRT-1 trackside signalling system, fitting its Atlas 100 solution. Alstom also fitted the entire fleet – 60 trains made up of four generations of rolling stock – with new onboard signalling equipment.
