Statistics from the Independent Rail Regulator indicate a 4.7% rise in the overall number of passenger journeys in April, May and June of 2015 as compared the same period last year.

The Director of Rail Delivery Group, which represents Network Rail and train operating companies, Michael Roberts, said:

Train travel is more popular than it has been for decades. Britains railway is carrying twice as many passengers as it did 20 years ago.
Rail franchising has deliveredmore services, more seats and longer trains. There is more to do to improve services and, supported by major government investment through Network Rail,we are planning and building to give passengers and the nation a better railway.”
