Although the radiant panel used in the ISO 5658 radiant panel test may look small, its position and power means that the specimens are exposed to 50 kilowatts per meter squared at one end, plus there is a pilot flame applied.
The test was developed to assess flame spread, with the test operator taking visual observations of flame travel along a reference line. This test is used to assess large materials that are used on European trains, plus it’s used with modifications for the Marine Industry. The Marine Industry has added thermocouples into the stack which is above the test specimen and as such, they are able to assess the heat release simultaneously to the flame spread.
