US Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy has outlined the latest developments in the rehabilitation and modernisation of Washington Union Station.
The Department of Transportation (USDOT) is taking a lead role in managing the station, aiming to improve safety and operational efficiency in the capital’s principal rail hub.

This week, both Amtrak and the Union Station Redevelopment Corporation (USRC) boards unanimously approved a revised cooperative agreement, restoring federal oversight of the station. The agreement sets out responsibilities for the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Amtrak, and USRC to coordinate restoration efforts, enhance security, and facilitate economic activity at the facility.
Secretary Duffy said:The American people have all seen how the mismanagement and neglect of our public transportation system by soft-on-crime leaders can lead to preventable tragedy. With a new agreement in place, we will make Union Station safer, cleaner, and more financially stable. Our great capital deserves nothing less.
The cooperative agreement is intended to support a range of objectives, including:
- Addressing infrastructure and state-of-good-repair projects
- Increasing revenue through retail, office, and event space
- Enhancing security measures
- Supporting multi-modal transportation connections
- Encouraging private investment
- Providing a family-friendly environment
- Improving the overall experience for passengers
Amtrak President Roger Harris said:Today’s announcement by DOT propels our mission to transform Union Station into the world-class gateway Washington deserves. In partnership with DOT and USRC, we’re committed to delivering a safer, cleaner, and more seamless travel experience for every passenger. We’ve already made significant strides—welcoming over a dozen new retailers, bolstering Amtrak Police presence, rolling out station refresh and deep-clean initiatives, and streamlining operations—and this new agreement accelerates that momentum.
The agreement marks a significant change in how Union Station will be managed, with federal agencies taking a more direct role in its operation and maintenance.
