US: CAF to Supply 102 LRVs for Boston Green Line

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has selected CAF USA to supply 102 light rail vehicles (LRVs) that will operate on the Green Line in the City of Boston.

The order is valued at 811 million USD and includes the manufacture of 102 vehicles, two driving simulators, fleet parts, tools and test equipment, and technical services for a warranty period of 3 years.

The contract also provides options for MBTA to purchase additional vehicles and equipment in the coming years.

The low-floor Type 10 units will replace the Type 7 and 8 models that currently operate on Boston’s Green Line.

This line consists of four branches stretching more than 30 kilometres, with tunnels dating back to the late 19th century. The Boston Green Line was the first underground rail line in the United States.

This contract is CAF Group’s second project in Boston, following MBTA’s order for 24 Type 9 LRVs in 2014.
