The Transpennine Route Upgrade will take another major step towards the transformation of Huddersfield station this autumn.
Between Saturday 19 September and Sunday 4 October, engineers will begin working to deliver a wide range of improvements both in and around Huddersfield in an effort to help improve reliability, increase capacity and support faster, more frequent services.
Works at Huddersfield station will include the extension of the subway towards platforms 4, 5 & 6, which will be remodelled to facilitate longer trains with more seats for customers, whilst renovation works will continue on the building’s ‘Euston-style’ roof.
During this time, work will also progress at Deighton station, which will see the installation of a new footbridge that, once complete, will feature lifts to provide step-free access.
Across the route, teams will carry out track and drainage renewal works to improve reliability, install new track to increase capacity and fit new overhead line equipment in an effort to enable the introduction of greener trains in the future.
All of these improvements form part of the wider Transpennine Route Upgrade programme, which seeks to modernise the railway between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York.
In order to deliver these works safely, both Huddersfield and Slaithwaite stations will be closed between Saturday 19 September and Monday 5 October, with the railway between Stalybridge and Mirfield also be affected during this period, rendering Mossley, Greenfield and Marsden stations closed on the weekends of 19-20 September and 3-4 October.
During this time, trains will continue to run wherever possible using diversionary routes that have benefitted from over 100 million GBP of investment thus far, and, where trains cannot run, rail replacement buses will operate, with Brighouse station serving as the main rail and bus interchange throughout the works.

During this time, works will also be advancing at Deighton station to provide a brand new, accessible station for our customers in 2027.
There will be disruption to Northern and other operators’ services during these works, with services amended and some trains replaced with buses. We strongly advise all customers to check before they travel and use National Rail Enquiries to plan their journeys.
With work at Huddersfield station set to continue as part of the station’s wider development, a further 38-day closure is planned following the final service on Christmas Eve, which will see the completion of the main phase of station upgrade works.
