Optimising Railways with Mersen

Rail transport is rapidly evolving to meet the demands of energy efficiency, sustainability, and digital transformation.

In this context, Mersen stands out as a global expert in electrical protection and power management, delivering high-performance solutions for the railway sector. From high-speed trains to urban tramways, Mersen’s technologies are essential to ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient electrical operation in rail systems worldwide.

Electrical Solutions for the Transport Sector

Mersen’s Train-Tram-Metro Rail Division is a key player in the innovation and supply of electrical solutions for the transportation sector. As networks become increasingly electrified, Mersen responds to growing demands for performance, safety and durability with a wide range of essential components (sensors, switches, protection systems) and a high-performance maintenance service.

Mersen’s solutions are installed in cities such as Lyon and Santiago de Chile, where reliability is essential. Mersen is also involved in infrastructure maintenance with its current collection and return to earth systems, that can be found in over 400 projects worldwide.

Energy Storage Solutions

Mersen’s next challenge: energy storage, a strategic issue for the future of electric transport.

ATMB, coordinator of the eRoadMontBlanc project, and the consortium partners (Université Gustave Eiffel, Alstom, Pronergy and GREENMOT) are leading an ambitious project aimed at decarbonising long-distance road transport. Supported by the French government as part of the France 2030 programme, the project will benefit from an investment of over €20 million to demonstrate the effectiveness of an innovative dynamic recharging technology.

Working as a subcontractor to the Gustave Eiffel University, Mersen is at the heart of the technical system: Mersen designs and manufactures an essential sensor placed between the rail and the HGV, ensuring continuous contact for recharging on the move. After a test phase at the Transpolis site, real-life trials will be carried out in 2026/2027.

By contributing to this project, Mersen is confirming its role as a pioneer in the development of technological solutions for sustainable mobility and electrification.
