Stadler and CapMetro have announced the signing of a new long-term service agreement that will see the former provide technical support and spare parts sourcing advisory services for the latter’s fleet of Stadler GTW trains operating on Austin’s commuter rail service.
From January 2027, Stadler will provide onsite technical support for the 10 GTW diesel-powered articulated multiple unit vehicles currently in operation on CapMetro rail in Austin.
The Stadler fleet initially began carrying passengers when the service launched in 2010, and this new contract will include a five-year base term from 2027 through to 2032 with two one-year option periods that could extend the partnership through 2034.
As part of the contract, Stadler will establish a dedicated, local service team of three to provide onsite technical support, engineering expertise, spare parts management, training and obsolescence support for CapMetro’s GTW fleet.
Through the agreement, Stadler will provide original equipment manufacturer (OEM) expertise in a bid to help CapMetro maintain its fleet safely, reliably, and efficiently.
For passengers, the agreement is designed to result in stronger support for the continued reliability and availability of the Red Line service by providing direct access to Stadler’s engineering and technical expertise, resulting in CapMetro being in a stronger position to address maintenance challenges proactively, reduce downtime, and keep trains operating at optimal performance as the fleet ages.
Additionally, Stadler will support CapMetro to manage obsolescence topics, identify replacement solutions for aging components and ensure the long-term availability of critical spare parts.

This latest agreement with CapMetro marks Stadler’s fourth service contract in Texas, with the company already providing service and maintenance support for Stadler fleets in various cities in Texas, underscoring its growing role as a long-term partner to transit agencies across the state.
