Slovakian operator, Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko (ZSSK), has signed a new contract with Stadler for the supply of up to four additional electric, double-decker KISS trains for its regional rail network

The contract, which has been valued at around 100 million EUR, will see the company deliver a set of two vehicles before the end of 2027, with the option to secure a further two units.

The delivery of the new units will double Stadler’s presence in Slovakia

The new trains will be implemented onto the railway line between Bratislava and Žilina, and will double the company’s presence within Slovakia.

Dr. Ansgar Brockmeyer, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing at Stadler, said:

Stadler trains have been running successfully in Slovakia for more than a year. I am pleased that we will once again deliver state-of-the-art KISS units to Slovak Railways. Thanks to their innovative design, these vehicles will offer the highest level of comfort and significantly increase capacity in regional and intercity passenger transport.

The lightweight aluminum construction means lower operating and maintenance costs throughout their entire life cycle, ensuring cost-effective operations for the client.

The units are set to be designed by Stadler Prague, with manufacturing duties being carried out by the Stadler Polska plant in Siedlce.

Each new KISS train measures in at 155.9 metres in length, and offers a seated capacity of 611 seats, with 30 first-class seats provided within the unit’s ‘Comfort Section’. The units are capable of travelling at a maximum speed of 160 km/h, and come equipped with a full suite of accessibility features for those with reduced mobility, as well as a set of four toilets on each train, with one specifically for disabled passengers.

Multifunctional areas will provide dedicated seating for wheelchair users with extra space for bicycles, push-chairs and luggage. Each train is equipped with modern passenger information systems, internal & external surveillance cameras, energy monitoring systems and on-board Wi-Fi.

Stadler first delivered a set of four KISS trains to Slovak Railways in 2023, which are now in use on regional lines in western Slovakia, operating between Bratislava and Nové Zámky and Bratislava and Trenčín or Púchov.

Zdeněk Majer, Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Stadler Prague, said:

Slovakia is yet another country in Central Europe that has been steadily increasing the number of Stadler trains operating on its rail network. I am delighted that we are continuing to strengthen Stadler’s market share in the region, which we believe has potential for further growth.
