DB Regio has contracted Škoda Group to refurbish up to six double-decker NIM Express trains operating on the high-speed link between Nuremberg and Munich in Germany.
Each train has accumulated nearly 1.5 million kilometres in service and will undergo extensive maintenance and refurbishment at Škoda Group’s facility in Šumperk, Czech Republic.
The contract includes a firm order for five trains with an option for the overhaul and testing of a sixth train. Work is scheduled to commence in the third quarter of 2025, with completion expected by August 2028.

The NIM Express fleet was designed to provide a reliable and comfortable travel experience while maintaining efficient operations. Each train is composed of a steering coach, four intermediate coaches, an end coach, and a Škoda 109E locomotive. This layout supports effective operations on the Nuremberg–Munich corridor.
The refurbishment will focus on essential maintenance and system updates to ensure continued reliability and performance.
The work will involve the refurbishment of bogies, doors, traction converters, motors, and wheelsets, along with final testing. Additionally, the contract covers transportation of the trains, the supply of key spare parts, and the possibility of further maintenance work if required.
Škoda Group’s Šumperk facility specialises in the servicing and modernisation of rolling stock, supporting the continued operation of the NIM Express trains. The refurbishment programme is intended to extend the service life of the fleet, contributing to the sustainability of rail transport.
