Siemens Smart Infrastructure has been contracted to supply DB Energie with advanced grid control software, modernising its transmission grid operations for the German railway network.

DB Energie, which provides energy to trains, railroad facilities, and real estate across Germany, will upgrade its current system, Spectrum Power 4, to the more advanced Spectrum Power 7, a component of Siemens Xcelerator.

The new software will enhance DB Energie’s ability to manage an increasingly complex network, detect and address anomalies, and mitigate security threats. It is designed to improve operational efficiency while ensuring ease of use for system operators.

In addition to Spectrum Power 7, this project will implement a range of applications and optimisation functions, a fully integrated data warehouse for long-term data archiving, and essential hardware such as servers and network components.

The implementation also features dedicated training systems and the planning software PSS®SINCAL, which is part of Siemens Gridscale X. To meet evolving security requirements, the system will receive regular updates.

Sabine Erlinghagen, CEO of Siemens Grid Software, said:

We are delighted to strengthen our partnership with DB Energie, supporting them to address the complexities of grid management with our technology. Ensuring a resilient and safe power supply is essential for the German railway network.

DB Energie operates a private transmission grid that spans approximately 16,000 km of traction power lines, 200 high-voltage switchgear, and around 50 generator units. The upgraded control system is scheduled to be operational by 2028.
