Siemens has celebrated the opening of its newly expanded train factory in Munich-Allach.

The factory, which is both one of the most modern train production sites in Europe and a key asset in Siemens Mobility’s Euorpean service network, has seen investments of around 250 million EUR into new buildings, production facilities and the expansion of AI-based solutions since 2023.

The expanded facility is now one of the most modern sites throughout Europe

The expansion is set to create more than 500 new jobs, increasing its workforce to approximately 2,500 employees.

The doubled workspace will see the production of Vectouro passenger cars alongside Siemens’ Vectron locomotive platform, marking the first time that all products based on Vectron technology will be produced in one location.

The site will also triple its capacity for modern services, as well as serve as the new headquarters for Siemens Mobility as a whole, bringing together research and development, production, service and management.

Roland Busch, CEO of Siemens AG, said:

In Allach, Siemens is demonstrating how competitive manufacturing is possible in Germany today: with superior products, maximum automation, digitalization, and the use of artificial intelligence. With the software and digital services offered to customers through our open business platform Siemens Xcelerator, we are showing the way to networked mobility of the future.

By expanding the site from 47,000 to more than 100,000 square metres, the company has provided the necessary space to produce up to 385 Vectron locomotives and up to 180 passenger cars per year, with the site now set to employ new technologies such as laser-guided installation, robotics, AI-enabled quality management, digital twins and AI-based software development.

Siemens’ Rail Service Centre is also being expanded in order to handle up to 80 locomotive overhauls and accident repairs annually, an increase from its current capacity to handle 25.

Once completed the competence centre for heavy maintenance work will handle triple its current capacity with four additional service tracks as well as specialised workshops for bogies and wheelsets.

The service portfolio at Munich-Allach is planned to be complemented by around 70 on-site data and software specialists to support international customers by providing modular services, as well as the Railigent X application suite.

Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility, said:

The expansion of our location in Munich-Allach into a global competence center and home of the new company headquarters combines efficiency and innovation. With an investment of around €250 million in modern production facilities, service capacities, and digital solutions, we are securing our competitiveness and further boosting our innovative strength.

By combining AI-based applications and innovative production technologies such as laser-guided installation, robotics, and digital twins, we are transforming ‘heavy metal’ into ‘heavy AI’ and taking the rail industry in Germany to a new level.
