Siemens is building a factory which will build trams in Gebze near Istanbul, in Turkey.

This is part of Siemens’s bid to put itself in the local manufacture and supply chain and thereby strengthen its opportunity to win tenders in Turkey and further afield. Siemens is already co-operating with local manufacturing partners in Turkey on a project-by-project basis.

Urban rail transportation is a growing industry, with the market increasing by around 3% a year. It depends on international production networks, with new manufacturers from Eastern Europe and Asia making headway into the tram market, thus driving competition.

In order to remain competitive in the industry, Siemens is building this factory and a local supply chain in Turkey.

Jochen Eickholt, head of Siemenss Rail Business said:

Our Avenio series trams have already proven themselves in some countries. We are now aiming at building on this succuss in the global market. We have the best chances of succeeding here with a factory in Turkey.

The factory will begin production in 2018.
