SBB Cargo Orders 20 Vectron Locomotives from Siemens Mobility

SBB Cargo International AG, in partnership with Südleasing GmbH, has commissioned an additional 20 Vectron multi-system locomotives from Siemens Mobility.

These newly ordered vehicles will feature the XLoad package to enhance the locomotives’ traction capability and allow for greater hauling capacity.

This upgrade enables the operation of heavier trains in single traction on the Swiss north-south axis, reducing the need for additional booster locomotives.

The locomotives will be leased from Südleasing under a flexible long-term contract. This contract will include 15 years of maintenance by Siemens Mobility.

Albrecht Neumann, CEO Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility sid:

“We are delighted about SBB Cargo International’s decision to further expand its fleet of Vectron locomotives and would like to thank them for their trust in us and in our locomotive. With this expansion of its fleet and the increased hauling capability provided by XLoad, our customer will be able to serve the Alpine region even more efficiently.”

The Vectron locomotives have a maximum speed of 160 km/h and are approved for operation in Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, and Italy.

Sven Flore, CEO of SBB Cargo International AG, said:

“For us, Vectron is the ideal locomotive for providing interoperable service between the Netherlands and Italy. In addition, the XLoad package will enable us to run longer and heavier trains in single traction through the Alps, eliminating the need for using a more expensive six-axle locomotive.”

The new locomotives will be deployed for transalpine transport, increasing SBB Cargo International’s Vectron fleet to 78 units.

Each locomotive will be equipped with the European Train Control System (ETCS) BL3 and relevant national train control systems, ensuring seamless operation across the approved countries.

This order brings the total number of Vectron locomotives sold by Siemens Mobility to nearly 2,500, serving 97 customers in 16 countries.
