The ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) has announced an expansion and modernisation of its fleet of wagons for the transport of light metal scrap and sheared scrap.

A total of 500 Eanos-y freight wagons will be provided by MFD Rail – with deliveries having already begun at the start of the year and all wagons expected to be operational by mid-2027.

As of the end of the start of August; 110 wagons had already entered service.

Each freight wagon was developed by RCG and MFD Rail to specifically meet the requirements of light metal and sheared scrap transport, offering a larger loading volume and featuring a robust design in order to minimise damage.

Numerous improvements have ben made to the wagon body, doors and fittings, with high-strength steel utilised to provide more rigour throughout. Each wagon offers a loading volume of around 95 metres cubed, and provide a capacity that is 15% higher than that of standard models currently on the market – allowing the permissible payload of roughly 65 tonnes to be used more effectively, especially when transporting light, loose scrap.

All wagons have been equipped with telematics that enable them to be located with high accuracy, facilitating both wagon dispatching and proactive mobile maintenance.

Wolfram Bahle, CSO of MFD Rail, said:

The Eanos-y clearly demonstrates what is possible when we work closely with our customers: Together with the ÖBB Rail Cargo Group, we have developed a wagon that is optimally tailored to the transport requirements of light metal scrap.

We are delighted to be making an important contribution to the modernisation of the ÖBB freight wagon fleet.

The key technical specifications for the Eanos-y freight wagons are as follows:

  • Number of axles: 4
  • Loading volume: approx. 95 m³
  • Payload: around 65 tonnes
  • Loading length: 52 feet (approx. 15.8 m)
  • Loading gauge: G1
  • Unrestricted shunting capability throughout Europe’s standard-gauge rail network
