Essential works to install a set of new tram tracks in Manchester city centre have been completed on time, with services now resuming along timetabled routes.
The works, which are part of a planned 147 million GBP package to maintain, upgrade and improve the city’s Metrolink network, were completed over the course of 30 days between Market Street & High Street/Church Street.

Elsewhere, works have also been completed on York Street, as well as between Eccles and MediaCityUK, as the improvements are set to ensure a safe, reliable and accessible network for those living in the city.
Funding for the works was provided as part of the government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement, with further upgrades set to be completed along the Rochdale tram line between Westwood and Derker over the upcoming early spring bank holiday weekend (Saturday 03 & Monday 05 May).
During this period, trams will continue to operate between the city centre and Freehold, with replacement bus services set to call at all stops between both Freehold and Rochdale Town Centre.
Further improvements are also set to be carried out on the line between Oldham Mumps and Derker on Sunday 18 May.
Other works planned for the city include track improvements at Portland Street, Aytoun Street and Piccadilly Gardens.
Ian Davies, Transport for Greater Manchester’s Network Director for Metrolink, said:, said:We have already successfully delivered a number of big projects this year that will keep services safe, reliable and accessible for all who use them.
Our next phase of works will take place on the Rochdale line over the bank holiday weekend. As always, we are doing our best to minimise disruption by laying on replacement bus services and I'd like to thank our passengers for bearing with us while we continue to upgrade the network.
Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) recently launched the procurement process for the next operating and maintenance contract for Metrolink, the UK’s largest light rail network.
