Kansas City’s KC Streetcar network will extend to the riverfront from Monday, 18 May 2026, following a 62 million USD investment.
The 0.7-mile extension connects the existing route to the Berkley Riverfront area. The new section begins at 3rd Street and Grand Boulevard in the River Market, crosses the Grand Boulevard Bridge, and continues to the midpoint of Berkley Riverfront.
The line is currently undergoing pre-revenue operations, a testing phase that includes system checks and staff training. Streetcars are already running along the new tracks as part of these preparations.
Once the extension is open, all streetcar services will operate through to the riverfront, making it the northern terminus of the 6.5-mile route.
Tom Gerend, Executive Director, KC Streetcar Authority said:We are reconnecting our riverfront for the next generation” said. “This streetcar extension represents our intentional return to where it all started and will serve as the new northern terminus for the 6.5 mile transit spine connecting our growing riverfront to downtown, UMKC ,and everything in between.
The project includes new track, overhead power systems, and a traction power substation. Construction was led by Radmacher Brothers Excavating, supported by a group of contractors and engineering firms. The Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) managed the project and oversaw federal funding.
The extension coincides with other developments in the riverfront area, including a new pedestrian and cycle bridge expected to open in early May.
