IN PICTURES: TBM ‘Sushila’ Reaches Green Park Way

HS2 Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) ‘Sushila’ has reached the end of its journey following the completion of a 5-mile excavation beneath the capital, coming to a stop at the Green Park Way site in Greenford, West London.

The TBM’s 9.48 metre cutterhead, front and middle shield were lifted from the vent shaft on Saturday 15 March via the use of a 750 tonne gantry crane.

Launched from West Ruislip in October 2022, the TBM was used to construct a portion of the Northolt Tunnel which will enable HS2 trains to travel from Old Oak Common Station towards the outskirts of the city.

The extracted portion weighs in at 850 tonnes and excavated over 1.2 million tonnes of earth along its journey, installing 4,217 tunnel rings before reaching its destination in December 2024.
