Hitachi Rail has signed a contract to implement its ERTMS Level 2 signalling system, consisting of the European Train Control System (ETCS), GSM-R communication and all associated IT technologies, on railway line 8 between Warsaw and Radom.

The project, which has been agreed upon in cooperation with DP System, is worth 85 million PLN, and is expected to be completed by December 2027.

The project is worth 85 million PLN

As part of the project; line 8 will be equipped with two Radio Block Centres (RBCs), the main component of the ETCS 2 system, which will be installed in Local Control Stations (LCS) at both Okęcie in Warsaw, and Radom.

The project is set to enable trains to run at closer intervals, increasing both capacity and potential overall service efficiency, with journey times also expected to be reduced.

Paweł Przyżycki, CEO of Hitachi Rail Poland, said:

Poland is one of the key markets in Europe for Hitachi. Our ambition is to continue our growth and actively participate in the creation of a modern, reliable, digital and sustainable railway here.

We are ready to support the Polish market with high-quality solutions for the entire railway ecosystem - from traffic control and signalling systems, together with effective cyber protection, and traction power supply and energy systems, to modern rolling stock.

Hitachi Rail has thus far implemented ETCS 2 technology along nearly 1,500km of railway lines across Poland and is currently the sole supplier of the ETCS Limited Supervision system, which enables the automatic monitoring of train movements as well as providing train data to drivers directly.

The ETCS Limited Supervision system is currently in operation along the railway line between Poznań and Wagrowiec.
