Hitachi Rail has successfully installed an ETCS Level 2 trial track in Finland.

The new signalling system has been installed on the Kouvola-Kotka/Hamina train line to test the use of ETCS L2 technology.

This implementation and the use of 5G technology will set a new standard for railway safety and efficiency in Finland, as the nation’s first ETCS L2 trial track.

The project was completed under a 2021 contract awarded to Thales’ Ground Transportation Systems by the Finnish Transportation Infrastructure Agency (FTIA). This business is now part of Hitachi Rail, following its completed acquisition on 31 May 2024.

Hitachi Rail also delivered the interlocking renewal for this project, which has been in commercial operation since November 2023.

The new system includes trackside and onboard equipment. This includes radio communication that conforms to Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) specifications.

Niko Hoffmann, General Program Manager, Hitachi Rail Finland, said:

“To deliver such complex and time-critical projects requires a full committed team and a strong collaboration with the customer and all stakeholders. Applying the skills and knowledge at the right time ensured to achieve this exceptional performance.”
