Hitachi Rail has delivered new digital signalling and telecommunications systems on key sections of Turkey’s high-speed rail network.
This upgrade boosts connectivity and capacity and aligns with European safety standards. The work therefore supports Turkey’s ambition to become a global leader in high-speed rail, strengthening its position as a transit hub connecting Europe and the Middle East.
The high-speed rail corridor between Ankara and Istanbul first launched in 2009 and reached full completion in 2014. Hitachi Rail has now implemented cutting-edge signalling solutions on the Geyve-Doğançay and Köseköy–Eskişehir sections, enhancing the line’s capacity and operational speed.
Key upgrades include:
These advancements ensure that Turkey’s rail infrastructure aligns with European standards for safety and interoperability, enabling seamless connections with future international rail networks.
Hitachi Rail’s contributions also extend to the 160-kilometre Kayas-Yerkoy section of the Ankara-Sivas high-speed line. This route, part of the 406-kilometre corridor, reduces travel time from 12 hours to just two, with trains reaching speeds of up to 250 km/h.
Notable upgrades on the Kayas-Yerkoy line include:
These improvements optimise track capacity, allowing trains to safely operate at closer intervals while maintaining efficiency and reliability.
The integration of European Train Control System (ETCS) signalling across these high-speed lines represents a significant step in aligning Turkey’s railways with European standards.
Furthermore, Hitachi Rail’s role extends beyond signalling, encompassing upgrades to Elmadag and Kirikkale interlockings, software enhancements, and continuous testing. These efforts were undertaken in collaboration with the Turkish State Railways (TCDD).
“This expansion not only benefits passengers with increased frequencies and improved service but also supports national and regional connectivity, aligning with Turkey’s ambitions to become a rail transit hub connecting Europe and the Middle East.”
