From the start of 2025, the Deutschland-Ticket, Germany’s flagship public transportation pass, has increased in price to 58 EUR per month.
The Deutschland-Ticket was introduced in 2023 as a 49 EUR ticket. This nationwide subscription provides unlimited travel on regional and local public transport within Germany, including buses, trams, U-Bahn, S-Bahn, and regional trains. However, it excludes long-distance trains such as ICE, IC, and EC services operated by Deutsche Bahn.
Designed to simplify fare structures and promote the use of public transport, the ticket is widely regarded as a transformative measure in Germany’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and alleviate road congestion.
The Deutschland-Ticket was introduced as a follow-up to the highly popular €9 Ticket, a temporary scheme launched in summer 2022 to combat rising fuel prices and encourage public transport use. The €9 Ticket demonstrated a strong demand for affordable travel options, with millions of Germans and tourists taking advantage of the offer.
Building on this momentum, the Deutschland-Ticket aims to make sustainable travel more accessible, reduce dependence on private cars, and align with Germany’s environmental goals. The initiative is supported by subsidies from both federal and state governments.
The price increase to 58 EUR per month now represents a 9 EUR rise in cost. Officials cite rising operational costs and inflation as the primary drivers behind the adjustment.
