Children and young people under the age of 18 will be able to travel for free on VIA Rail this summer when accompanied by a parent, as part of the federal government’s new Canada Strong Pass initiative.
The programme was announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s newly reelected Liberal government and is part of a broader effort to encourage Canadians to explore the country domestically during the summer months, particularly in the context of recent cross-border economic tensions.
Under the plan, the free rail travel will be available nationwide from June to August 2025. The government has stated the measure is intended to support young families and help Canadians rediscover the cultural and natural landscapes of their own country.
The offer applies to children and youth travelling with a parent or guardian, and will be valid on VIA Rail services across its national network. In addition, young adults aged 18 to 24 will have access to heavily discounted fares during the same period.
This initiative complements other travel and tourism-related measures announced as part of the Canada Strong Pass, including free access to national museums and galleries for under-18s and reduced camping fees in national parks.
Prime Minister Carney said:At a time when our economy is under attack from President Trump, Canadians are stepping up – helping our neighbours, buying local, and celebrating our beautiful country. Whether it’s trips to national parks and historic sites, spending the day at a national art gallery or museum, or hiking Canadian trails, my new government will help the next generation discover all Canada has to offer this summer. We are a proud country – and united, we will strengthen our Canadian identity in the face of this crisis.
VIA Rail is expected to confirm operational details in the coming weeks, including how the free and discounted fares will be accessed through its booking system.
The pass is part of a wider effort to boost domestic travel, support family affordability, and strengthen national ties during a time of heightened focus on Canadian self-reliance and identity.
