International Level Crossing Awareness Day

The International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) returns in 2026 with its 18th edition, combining a worldwide safety campaign with an international conference hosted at UIC Headquarters in Paris, France. The conference takes place on 9 June 2026, with the associated TRESPAD conference following on 10 June 2026 and technical visits scheduled for 11 June 2026.

About the Event

ILCAD is an annual initiative coordinated by the UIC, the worldwide railway organisation, aimed at improving awareness of level crossing safety among road users and pedestrians. Each edition of the campaign centres on the message to “Act Safely at Level Crossings” and brings together representatives from the railway sector, road transport organisations and international institutions including UNECE, IRU and IRF.

The event serves as a platform for sharing good practices and projects designed to reduce the number of accidents at level crossings. Each year, the campaign focuses on a particular audience or safety theme, with the aim of changing behaviour and reducing risk at these critical points of road and rail interaction.

The Conference

The 2026 conference will be held in person at UIC Headquarters in Paris and conducted in both English and French. It brings together professionals from across the railway and road transport sectors to discuss level crossing safety, present research and exchange practical approaches to accident prevention.

The TRESPAD conference, held on 10 June 2026, runs alongside the main ILCAD event, broadening the scope of discussion within the level crossing safety community. Technical visits on 11 June 2026 offer delegates an opportunity to observe safety measures and infrastructure in a practical setting.
