The European Commission have approved a €321.1million high speed Madrid-Extremadura-Portuguese Border line. €205.1million of funding is from the European Regional Development Fund.

The project is part of the TEN-T European transport infrastructure network and meets the requirements of the European directive on the interoperability relating to the high-speed trans-European railway system. This project will form part of the Atlantic Corridor connecting Lisbon and Madrid to Paris and international lines in Germany and France.

The double-track line will improve connectivity in Madrid, the Extremadura region and Lisbon by increasing capacity and travel time, at the same time improving safety by eliminating level crossings.
