The City of Edmonton has signed a purchase contract with Hyundai Rotem Company for a new fleet of high-floor light rail vehicles to support planned network expansions and replace ageing rolling stock.
The agreement covers the design and manufacture of 32 high-floor vehicles for use on the Metro Line Northwest Phase 1 and Capital Line South Phase 1 extensions, as well as the phased replacement of Siemens U2 vehicles that have operated in Edmonton for more than four decades.
City officials confirmed on 3 February 2026 that the contract has been awarded to Hyundai Rotem Company following the completion of an international procurement process.
Sara Nichols, Deputy City Manager, Integrated Infrastructure Services said:The City requires new light rail vehicles for Edmonton’s expanding LRT network to move people quickly and efficiently. We’re pleased to be working with HRC to support Edmonton’s growth to a city of two million people.
Representatives from the City of Edmonton and Hyundai Rotem signed the contract at a ceremony held in Edmonton. Production is scheduled to begin later this year, with vehicle deliveries expected in 2029 and 2030.

Hyundai Rotem is already supplying vehicles for Edmonton’s Valley Line West project under a 2021 contract covering 46 low-floor LRVs.
