Avanti West Coast has launched a new, entirely virtual work experience course for young people aspiring to a career in rail.

The six-hour course, which has been realised through a partnership with careers platform Springpod, is a free online programme aimed at anyone over the age of 13 and includes information on what it’s like to work with Avanti West Coast, engineering experiences, customer experience roles and office positions.

The course is part of the operator’s work to inspire young people to join the railway industry

Students who finish the course, which can be completed entirely in their own time, will receive a certificate which can then be used when applying for any future education opportunities.

Thus far, more than 150 students from 91 schools have enrolled in the course, which was envisioned as part of the King’s ‘Get into Railways’ programme which aims to provide young people with both skills training and work experience.

Jo MacPhail, People Director at Avanti West Coast, said:

Young people are the future of our industry. With this course we want to inspire the next generation of expert engineers, customer experience leaders and innovative office workers that are passionate about rail.

We are continuously committed to work with our partners to create opportunities that support young people in shaping their future careers, and Springpod enables us to reach a wider audience.
