Arriva’s Grand Central Seeks Extension to Track Rights

Arriva Group’s UK open access train operator, Grand Central has applied to extend its track access rights on the East Coast Main Line until 2038, alongside an investment in bi-mode trains.

This extension would secure Grand Central’s services for an additional 15 years, reinforcing Arriva’s long-term commitment to the UK rail industry.

Operating since 2007, Grand Central connects 15 destinations, including key cities in Yorkshire and the North East, directly with London’s Kings Cross.

As part of its application to the Office of Rail and Road (ORR), Grand Central has also outlined plans to invest in a new fleet of Bi-Mode trains, capable of operating on both electrified and non-electrified lines.

This proposed fleet upgrade is designed to future-proof the service, enhance efficiency, and offer greater flexibility in operations as the UK continues to expand track electrification.

Key benefits of the new trains include:

  • Increased Capacity: The new trains would offer approximately 20% more seating than the current Class 180 units, accommodating growing passenger demand.
  • Modernised Fleet: The new Bi-Mode trains would replace the ageing 24-year-old Class 180 units, offering improved comfort and customer-focused features.
  • Greener Services: With the ability to operate on both electric and non-electric tracks, these trains would reduce carbon emissions and provide smoother journeys, aligning with broader environmental goals.
David Brown, Managing Director of Arriva UK Trains, said:

“Grand Central plays an important role within Arriva Group’s rail portfolio and securing long-term access will allow us to invest and grow, supporting the Government’s ambitions for Britain’s railways to thrive. Grand Central provides reliable and efficient journeys to passengers who would otherwise not have access to services and therefore plays an essential role in economic growth by connecting communities across the north of England.”

The proposed extension is currently under review by the ORR.
