The updated timetable, which took effect on 16 June 2025, includes a new afternoon departure from Los Angeles and an evening return from San Diego:

  • Train 582 departs Los Angeles Union Station at 4:10 pm and arrives at San Diego’s Santa Fe Depot at 7:04 pm.
  • Train 593 departs San Diego at 8:10 pm. and arrives in Los Angeles at 10:57 pm.

The Pacific Surfliner route, operated by Amtrak and managed by the LOSSAN Rail Corridor Agency, runs 351 miles through six counties and serves 29 stations from San Diego to San Luis Obispo. The line is the most heavily used state-supported intercity rail corridor in the United States.

Fred Jung, Chair of the LOSSAN Agency and Mayor of Fullerton said:

This service expansion reflects our ongoing commitment to increase passenger rail access across Southern California. The additional frequencies offer greater travel flexibility while supporting a convenient, reliable transportation option.

The additional roundtrip aims to fill gaps in the timetable, offering improved options for both business and leisure travellers. In doing so, it contributes to restoring the level of service available prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, when the corridor supported 13 daily roundtrips between San Diego and Los Angeles.

Jason Jewell, Managing Director of the LOSSAN Agency, said:

This service expansion provides more transportation options between San Diego and Los Angeles – just in time for summer travel. It is the next step in restoring Pacific Surfliner service and creating more transportation options to Southern California’s most popular events and destinations.

In addition to the 12 roundtrips now operating between San Diego and Los Angeles, the current Pacific Surfliner schedule includes five daily services to Goleta and three full-length roundtrips between San Diego and San Luis Obispo. Amtrak’s Thruway Bus connections extend the route’s reach to destinations including Oakland, Solvang, Paso Robles and Indio.

All Pacific Surfliner trains provide amenities such as reclining seats, power outlets, Wi-Fi, bicycle and luggage storage, and an onboard Market Café, which serves a selection of food and drinks, including regional wine and beer.

The service expansion is part of a broader effort by the LOSSAN Agency and its partners to improve rail connectivity and passenger experience across Southern California.
