Amtrak has begun construction on a series of new and upgraded maintenance facilities across the United States.

The new sites will support both the operator’s existing fleet and future generations of trainsets, with development set to include provisions to allow full trainsets to be inspected and serviced together.

By developing combined maintenance facilities; Amtrak has stated that downtime is expected to be reduced and efficiency will be improved across the board.

Major facilities are now being developed in key hub locations such as Seattle, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and upstate New York – all of which will be supported by additional satellite locations across the network.

In addition to reductions in downtime and improved efficiency; the investments are hoped to keep equipment in stronger condition, improve operational performance and ensure trains are ready for customers.

The programme is being delivered in partnership with the Federal Railroad Administration, and Amtrak recently published a video highlighting development, which can be seen below.
